From TSN: Biron accepts Sabres' qualifying offer Goaltender Martin Biron has accepted his $2.1-million US, one-year qualifying offer from the Buffalo Sabres, even though he has asked the club to trade him. But the Sabres now have leverage when it comes to negotiations with starter Ryan Miller, who is a restricted free agent. Biron was unhappy with his ice time last season. The six-foot-three, 163-pound goalie from Lac St. Charles, Que., appeared in 35 games for Buffalo. The 28-year-old finished the regular season with a 2.89 goals-against average and a 21-8 record, including a 13-game winning streak from Nov. 15 to Dec. 17. Biron was a first-round pick (16th overall) of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1995 NHL entry draft and in 281 games, compiled a record of 122-111-25 with a 2.49 goals-against average. |

Hot off the press, from about an hour ago... Biron signs qualifier; wants a trade BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Goaltender Martin Biron received the Buffalo Sabres one-year qualifying offer and expects to sign it but only in hopes the team grants his wish to be traded. "We would like for him to be traded as fast as possible," Biron's agent, Gilles Lupien said Monday. Lupien said he will recommend his client accept the $2.1-million US offer by the NHL's mid-July deadline because it would potentially make a trade easier. By matching his salary last year, the Sabres retained rights to Biron. A seven-year NHL veteran, Biron wants a shot at starting for another team after losing the No. 1 job in Buffalo to rookie Ryan Miller last season. Lupien said Sabres general manager Darcy Regier assured him the team is attempting to make a trade. "I think Darcy is really trying and that's the important part," Lupien said. "If he said, `No, we won't trade him,' then we would have a problem. "But he said, `We're going to look into it,' and that's good enough for me." Regier, who was not immediately available for comment, has previously said he is prepared to trade Biron but wants to ensure the Sabres have a capable and experienced backup in place first. The Sabres, who traded former backup Mika Noronen to Vancouver in March, lack experienced goalie depth in their system, meaning the team would have to fill the backup job through free agency or a trade. Biron is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, so it would be to the Sabres advantage to trade him now and get something in return. Biron had a 21-8-0 record and 2.98 goals-against average with one shutout in 36 appearances last season. He also set a franchise record by winning 13 consecutive starts from Nov. 15 to Dec. 15, filling in while Miller recovered from a broken thumb. Biron's playing time diminished down the stretch and he made no appearances during the team's extended playoff run, which ended with Buffalo losing Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final to eventual Stanley Cup-champion Carolina. Both Lupien and Biron declined to speculate about whether Biron would consider not playing for the Sabres if a trade didn't materialize by the start of next season. "It's really a fine line," Lupien said. Added Biron: "I'm just hoping that I get to be a starter on opening night somewhere." Although happy with the time he spent in Buffalo, Biron said he is eager for a fresh start. "I love being here," Biron said. "But I want to play. "I don't think that's being selfish. It's wanting to fulfill everything that you think you can do." Buffalo's first-round pick in the 1995 draft, Biron has a career 122-111-25 record but was inconsistent after taking over the starting duties after Dominik Hasek forced his trade to Detroit in July 2001. Biron was disappointed a trade didn't materialize during the NHL draft last weekend in Vancouver, which would have given him and his family time to get accustomed to a new city. "I don't think that's unreasonable," Biron said. "But now that it didn't happen, hopefully things will happen quickly in the next few weeks." |

At the end of an AP story on the Sabres from 6-5: One player not expected back is Martin Biron, who is eligible for a $2.2 million qualifying offer, which would be too expensive for a backup goalie. Regier referred to Biron as an asset and didn't rule out re-signing and then trading the player. Rotowire says on 6-6: There's a good chance Biron has played his final game for the Sabres, The Buffalo News reports. Ryan Miller is the clear-cut #1 for probably the next several years, and as much as the Sabres like Biron, $2.13 million is too much for a backup. In fact, coach Lindy Ruff is already talking about Biron in the past tense: "In every sense, Marty was a perfect professional. We have a great relationship. It will be disappointing. We've learned a lot from each other. I tried to help him as much as I could, and he was tremendous with Ryan through everything this year." Biron posted a strong season in 2005-06, with a 21-8-0-3 record, a 2.88 GAA and a .905 save percentage. Someone else will be interested in seeing if he can earn a #1 job once again. Here at MartyBiron.Net I'm going to be following this during the off season and giving you periodical updates on whether Marty will be returning to Buffalo(which doesn't look likely) or moving on to another team. Which let's face it folks I know that we'd all rather see Marty be a #1 somewhere else then warm the bench in Buffalo. |

Marty won 13 consecutive starts from November 15th to Dec 17th. He was the first NHL goalie to win 13 consecutive starts since Chris Osgood did it for Detroit in the 1995-96 season. And broke a team record of 9 set by Gerry Desjardins in the 1976-77 season. And with win 11 broke a record set by Dominik Hasek in 2001-02 with 10. I didn't write about the streak while it was going on because I didn't want to jinx it. Marty won the 13 starts beginning with my first official Sabres game, when I went out to Buffalo on November 15th for Sabres vs. Devils. As I've said my pictures from that game are in the Picture Gallery 3. It's very cool to know that I was there for game 1 of the streak. |
